The Review:

I think I can keep this one pretty short and sweet. (Also, sorry for basically skipping September! I messed up my shoulder and was so busy I don’t think I read more than this book. It was CRAZY. But I should be back now!)

Anyhow! Glitter was great. I really enjoyed the premise, and I though it was carried out very well. The world-building was my absolute favorite, though, and I adored the details of the futuristic world paired with Marie Antionette’s French court, as well as the bleak contrast to the world outside. Bleak, though, in a way that meant you didn’t know which side was worse to be on.

A lot of this book is based on the fact that nothing is ever black and white. Danica’s actions, the consequences, the people she spends time with, even Danica herself, are morally gray, and that darkness descends until you’re not sure who you’re rooting for. The book is written in such a way that you take the journey with Danica, not over her, so you understand suddenly what she does; you realize, all at once, what your actions mean.

And you realize that sometimes what seems right at the time is very, very wrong.

Anyway, I adored it, but only 4 stars because it does start a little bit slow, even though I liked that it gave me time to get used to the world and setting and get to know the cast a little bit. Enough that it would make me feel things later on, of course. And be prepared to feel sympathy for the bad guys and hate the good guys sometimes– but it’s not really willing? I don’t really know how to describe it.

What I can say is that you probably won’t like anyone in this book by the end of it, but that’s okay. It’s almost like The Young Elites that way- I didn’t care for any of the characters, but I still enjoyed the book. But I do suggest going into Glitter knowing that this isn’t some savior novel where the perfect solution magically appears.  No, it’s much more complicated and dangerous than that.
